Filling People's Buckets

On Friday, Chris and I were invited, with other parents, to come down to the school at 11:30. We were told Amber was being awarded for their school's monthly challenge. First we heard Terry Fox's brother Fred speak. It was a great experience, he had so many inspiring and touching things to say. He shared photos of him and Terry as children. So I was already a bit emotional when the time came for the children's awards. Starting with the most junior students they called out each name for those receiving their award. Award for Filling People's Buckets. I love that term. Its so straight forward and uplifting. Amber was so nervous to stand in front of the entire school. So her teacher went up with her to sit by her side while she was handed her certificate. Then Amber sat down to watch the older grades receive their awards. After it was all done they gathered the awarded kids and did a group photo. I think if Jordan's friend Morgan, who Amber knows, wasn't there, she wouldn't have sat for it.
After that, while walking her back to her classroom, I could physically see the tension leave her body as we returned to the kindergarten wing. She started smiling and talking loudly. And then she let herself be happy about her award. Which she should be.

Ubuntu: How could any of us be happy if all the others are sad?
